Fiachra Eviston
Human Biomechanics Specialist,
Owner of Functional Patterns MelbourneFrom many years of doing high-impact sports such as rollerblading and amateur muay thai / boxing, my body had accumulated a lot of wear and tear.
Knee pain from running, neck pain from boxing, hip and shoulder pain from a combination of all of the above.
Having been to myotherapy, chiropractors, and physios to no avail, I was introduced to FP by a friend and did some research. I completed the HF1 course in 2016 and went about fixing my dysfunctions. Learning and applying the material from the HBS courses. I’ve been given the tools to significantly reduce the pain and instill better movement patterns in both myself and my clients. FP is the real deal but it takes time, patience, and a lot of hard work from both practitioner and trainer to attain a good result.
Opening Melbourne’s premier facility has allowed for a greater client base and the chance for people in the greater Melbourne metropolitan area to come in and start the process of getting out of pain and moving better.

I played ice hockey from the age of 4-27. At 15, I started training in the gym to improve my performance and build the muscle needed to compete at a professional level.
At 23, I reached my top shape, 86kg with 5% body fat, but despite that, I wasn’t able to walk for more than 10 minutes without dealing with some sort of lower back and shoulder pain, due to injuries never fully rehabilitated.
Furthermore, I used to get seasonal flu several times during the hockey season and I was admitted twice to hospital for unexplainable symptoms, like loss of balance and coordination.
With time, I started questioning the efficiency and sustainability of my training and, after some research, found Functional Patterns. I took the Human Foundations Course in April 2016 and the following Human Biomechanics Specialist courses. Since then, FP has been a game changer.
For the first time in years, I felt like my body was finally regenerating and slowly overcoming the pain and discomfort I was constantly dealing with. Now, I move better than ever without the sensation of my joints wearing out and my health and physiology have substantially improved, confirming I have chosen the right path.
Functional Patterns has given me the tools to fix myself and help others achieve more functional and sustainable movement and lifestyle.

I began my journey with FP in 2016 while studying my Cert IV in personal training. Initially, I was excited to start a new career in the health and fitness industry. However, I quickly realised that the course content wasn’t what I was hoping to learn as it seemed the entire industry was built around values that didn’t align with mine.
My very first exposure to Functional Patterns (FP) was enough to spark my interest and open the door for me – it made so much sense that humans should train according to their biological characteristics. Instead of training for arbitrary reasons (building muscle detached from the functions that moulded them) and a distorted vision of aesthetics that plagues the fitness industry, FP seeks to build muscle around the functions that we evolved to perform. Aesthetics is still the goal, but how they are achieved differs dramatically. Traditional training methods and therapies left me short-changed, never delivering what was promised despite the hard work I put in. My previous career in construction left me with a broken body and in desperate need of a fix. FP became the solution.
Since then I haven’t looked back; my body feels brand new. I have eliminated chronic back pain, hip and knee issues and I am a much calmer and stoic individual. I spent 3 1/2 years working as a Human Biomechanics Specialist at FP Brisbane, which has given me a wealth of experience working with a wide array of individuals, the young and the elderly, those with athletic backgrounds, and most with varying forms of chronic pain, discomfort and looking for a solution, much like I was years ago.
It gives me great satisfaction to be a part of a grassroots movement changing the way the fitness industry operates and educating people on what true sustainability is in the realm of health and movement. We believe wholeheartedly that FP is the gold standard in training and we hold ourselves accountable to that standard every day.

Prior to finding FP, I lived many years with chronic back and knee pains, simply thinking that it was normal to be experiencing pain on a day-to-day basis. The pain had accumulated from years of traditional weight-lifting, working as a painter by trade, as well as general wear and tear.
I tried chiropractors, osteopaths and physiotherapists to help remedy the pain, but it was all short-lived providing temporary pain relief. It had gotten to the point where I was unable to do daily tasks without experiencing aches and pains.
I have been applying the FP principles for the past four years and have experienced substantial improvements. Not only am I out of pain, but I have the tools to be able to reduce pain and assist others in improving their overall functionality in movement.
I’ve noticed that as a result of addressing dysfunctions in my own posture and movement, I’ve seen improvements in my sleep, digestion, stress levels, and overall quality of life.
My goal is to live a healthy sustainable pain-free life and assist others in doing the same.

I was always an active child, playing many sports throughout my primary and secondary school years. However, I frequently felt joint pain including what I was told were “growing pains”. I continued to keep an active lifestyle and play sport competitively until a hip injury I had accumulated from running became chronic. Unable to be physically active and attempt to achieve my physical goals, my injury was taking a toll not only on my physical health but mental state as well.
I had tried a number of different treatments to alleviate my pain, from physiotherapy and massage to ultrasound, laser, and pulsed electromagnetic fields therapy. I had even begun talks with surgeons, only to find temporary relief from treatments, provided I rested and stayed away from my sport.
I came across Functional Patterns and having tried everything else decided to give it a go. I wish I had come across it sooner and not as a last resort. After training Functional Patterns, my injury had subsided and I’m now in the process of being able to scale the power and efficiency of my movement patterns without pain arising. Functional Patterns gave me a way of training and rehab that did not damage my body, a newfound understanding of how the human body works, and by extension, my mental health back as it’s highly linked to physical health.
My goal is now to continue improving my own body and help others live a sustainably healthy lifestyle for longevity by building a stable and resilient physical foundation upon which to move.

I joined a local gym at the age of 16 where I dedicated myself to training bodybuilding style five days a week. Eventually, I transitioned to what I believed was more “functional” training and crafted my own CrossFit-style workouts. Unfortunately, this led to injuries. Believing poor technique was the culprit, I joined a weightlifting gym to master the Olympic lifts. This helped me become quite strong but I frequently dealt with minor injuries and a persistent dull ache in my lower back.
At this stage I was also about to become a qualified Osteopath, aiming to address my issues and help others by targeting the root causes of dysfunction. However, I soon realised that once I was treating patients, I could help alleviate their pain but the relief was often temporary, as patients tended to revert to their old habits that caused their issues in the first place. This realisation inspired me to pursue a more effective approach.
That’s when I discovered Functional Patterns on Instagram and was impressed by their remarkable results in eliminating pain and restoring proper body function. Attempting to replicate some of their exercises made me realise the need for proper instruction. I reached out to my local FP gym and started the 10-week online course. Over the next year, I eliminated my recurring pains, drastically improved my posture, reduced gastrointestinal discomfort, and developed new body connections I had never felt before.
My goal is to continue enhancing my body’s function and quality of life while helping others achieve the same, eliminating their aches and pains.

My athletic journey began in high school athletics, leading me to Olympic weightlifting to enhance my performance. Finding success in the sport, I focused solely on weightlifting for 3-4 years. However, this dedication eventually led to debilitating hip pain and a cascade of peripheral injuries. Two years of unsuccessful rehabilitation left me mentally drained and facing a recommendation for hip surgery.
Seeking solutions, I consulted physiotherapists, chiropractors, podiatrists, and osteopaths to no avail. A friend then recommended Functional Patterns (FP), and I was immediately struck by the methodical and effective nature of the training sessions. Progress was gradual but compounded over time, and I am now in the best physical condition of my life.
Through the process of resolving my own hip issues and other problems, I’ve gained a new understanding of the body and our approach to movement. I am passionate about helping individuals who have faced similar struggles, as well as those simply seeking to optimize their performance.
